Leagadh Crainn i nDún Garbhán | Felling of Trees in Dungarvan

*English Below*

Glasaigh i gcoinne leagadh crainn gan chúis i nDún Garbhán.

Tá imní léirithe ag an gComhaontas Glas faoi phlean ag an gComhairle suas le seasca crann a leagadh ar an gcuarbhóthar i nDún Garbhán.

Tá sé i gceist ag Chomhairle Cathrach agus Contae Phort Láirge thart ar seasca crann fásta a leagan ar an gcuarbhóthar timpeall ar bhaile Dún Garbhán, sin beagnach an ceathrú chuid den 252 crann atá ag fás ar an gcuid sin den N25.

Táim tar éis an tuairsc a bhí ullmhaithe don chomhairle a scrúdú agus láthair na gcrann a fheiceáil dom féin agus tá imní orm nach bhfuil substaint leis an moladh go leor des na crann seo a leagan. Sa chás go bhfuil baol ann go dtitfeadh crann tá sé intuigthe go leagfaí iad go sábhailte roimh ré, ach níl sé inghlactha crann fásta a leagan de bharr cúpla cnag beag ar an gcosán in aice leis nó duilleoga ag cur isteach ar shoilse sráide."

Críostóir Ó Faoláin, Ionadaí Áitiúil an Chomhaontais Ghlais i nDún Garbhán.

Dúradh linn nach bhfuil teagmháil mar is ceart déanta ag an gComhairle leis na daoine atá ina gcónaí in aice láimhe. Beidh tionchar nach beag ag leagadh na gcrann seo ar na tithe in aice leo. Bheadh súil againn go mbeidh tuairim na ndaoine seo curtha san áireamh agus cinneadh á dhéanamh.

Tá iarrtha ag an gComhaontas Glas ar an gComhairle athmhachnamh a dhéanamh ar an gceist agus gan chrann a leagan mura bhfuil cúis substaintiúil leis. Sá chás go mbíonn sé riachtanach crann a leagan, táimid ag éileamh ar an gComhairle ar a laghad crann amháin fásta nó leathfhásta nua a chur ar an gcuarbhóthar. Tá ribín ghlais curtha againn ar na crainn atá le bheith leagtha ag an gComhairle chun aird a tharraingt ar an scéal seo. Is cuid thábhachtach den bhaile iad na crainn seo, cuireann siad le dea-íomhá an bhaile, cuireann infrastruchtúir glas nadúrtha le folláine an bhaile, agus tacaíonn siad le cúrsaí bithéagsúlachta agus fiadhúlra. Bhí sé mar aidhm riamh ag an gComhairle cur le brat crainn an bhaile, sprioc a thagann salach ar an mbeart seo chun leathchéad crann sláintiúil fásta a scrios ar bheagán cúis.

Níl sé ró-dhéanach stop a chur le scrios na gcrann seo. Táimid ag tabhairt cuiridh do dhaoine sa bhaile atá ar aon intinn linn teagmháil a dhéanamh leis an gComhairle ar an gceist seo ag contact@waterfordcouncil.ie, ag iarraidh orthu gan chrainn sláintiúla a leagan.

Greens oppose needless felling of trees in Dungarvan.

The Greens have expressed concern at Council plans to fell up to sixty trees on the

Dungarvan bypass. Waterford City and County Council have confirmed their intention to fell the trees, nearly a quarter of the 252 mature trees growing on that section of the N25.

I have read the report that was prepared for the Council and have seen these trees for myself. I am worried that there seems to be very little substance to the proposal to fell most of the trees in question. Where there is a danger that a tree might fall it makes sense to safely remove it, but it is not acceptable to cut down a healthy mature tree because of a few little cracks in a footpath or because of leaves around a street light.

Críostóir Ó Faoláin, the Green Party Local Area Rep for Dungarvan.

A local resident told us that they have not been consulted by the Council on the felling of trees close to their home. The felling of these trees will have a significant impact on nearby homes. We would expect the council to take the concerns of local residents into account when making this decision.

The Greens have asked the Council to rethink their plans and to refrain from felling trees without a substantial reason. Should it be necessary to fell some trees for safety reasons, we are asking the Council to ensure at least one new mature or semi-mature tree is planted on the bypass to replace it. We have placed a green ribbon on the trees to be felled by the Council to highlight this issue. These trees are an important part of the town, they enhance the towns image. Natural green infrastructure aids in creating a sense of wellbeing while supporting biodiversity and wildlife. It has always been an aim of the council to increase tree coverage in the town, an objective which is hardily achieved by cutting down many healthy trees for little reason.

It is not too late to stop the destruction of these trees. We are inviting people in the town who are of the same mind to contact the Council on this issue at

contact@waterfordcouncil.ie to press them not to destroy healthy trees in Dungarvan.
